Excelsior Academy

Turrets and Teaching

The new Excelsior Academy is a striking building which folds itself onto the steep landscape providing 4 levels of classrooms, halls and theatres. The focal point of the entrance is the turret shaped lobby which leads into the double aspect glazed reception. The lighting design responds to the turret form and the arrow slit windows provide the order which the linear lighting reflects.

A Nod to Hadrian

The slope of the site results in a number of large retaining walls dominating the play areas and secondary entrances. As you approach the academy from the main road the largest of the retaining walls is grazed with warm up light to enrich the stone colour and amplify the texture.
