Maggie’s Centre Manchester wins three RIBA North West Awards

Cundall is delighted that Maggie’s at the Robert Parfett Building, Manchester, was presented with three RIBA North West Awards:

  • RIBA North West Regional Award
  • RIBA North West Project Architect of the Year
  • RIBA North West Building of the Year

Maggie’s Centres provide a place of refuge for people affected by cancer and place great value upon the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help in the process of therapy.

Working with Foster and Partners, Cundall Light4 has provided lighting design for Maggie’s at the Robert Parfett Building, Manchester. The building is surrounded by gardens and internal courtyards which relate to the different spaces within the building. Deep canopies provide shelter to the Centre’s open terraces. Arranged over a single storey, a natural timber structure focuses around a central spine with the roof rising in the centre to create a mezzanine level illuminated with natural light. Exposed lightweight beams and timber lattice support the roof. The result is a lightweight structure and therapeutic space that is a celebration of light and nature.

As part of the award process, RIBA Regional Award winners are entered for the RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence. We look forward to hearing the results.
